Switch off or unplug major appliances before power returns, then restore them one at a time a few minutes apart, starting with the refrigerator. Returning power can spike and damage control and inverter boards.
During the Outage
- Unplug or switch off the fridge, washer, dryer, dishwasher and microwave.
- Keep fridge and freezer doors closed: about 4 hours of safe cold in a closed fridge, 24 hours in a half-full freezer, 48 in a full one (USDA).
- Check Oncor’s outage map for restoration estimates.
When Power Comes Back
- Wait a few minutes for power to stabilize.
- Plug in the refrigerator first, then other appliances one at a time.
- Give the fridge 4–6 hours to reach temperature.
Signs of Surge Damage
- Blank display or error codes
- Fridge running but not cooling
- Clicking with no start
Control or inverter boards typically cost $300–$650 to replace — far less than a new appliance. Refrigerator repair.
Prevent It Next Time
Use surge protection on sensitive appliances, or ask an electrician about a whole-home surge protector.
